Chapter 15: A Time to Remember & Reflect

I cannot believe that this is the last blog post. Nor can I believe that we only have two classes left. The time really flew by and I have to say I'm going to miss this class. I liked that we were a small class and really got to know some of each other’s interests. I'm also going to miss Ms. More, she's a great teacher and made class fun, it also helped that she is a fellow nerd :). I think that this class has been very useful to me. Not only did I get to see just how good my writing is going from high school to college, but the types of writing assignment we had will be useful in the future. I am sure that as an English major I've going to have to write multiple Rhetorical Analysis and Research papers. I also know that the fact that we worked on resumes and cover letters was a huge benefit. It's nice that all I have to do for my resume now is just to keep updating it when I accomplish something new. I am also grateful that I learned how to write a cover letter so that whenever I apply for a job I know what to do, which will better ensure my chance of getting the job. The job unit really helped my confidence in getting jobs. Whether that be a summer job, or in giving me some comfort in thinking about applying for a job after college. The fact that I already have my resume done when most seniors are working on theirs is awesome because I feel more prepared. I am also glad that I took this class when I did, because I believe that although it wasn’t set up as one, for me it was a good transition in going from writing in high school and writing in college. Although I don't like bragging or talking about myself the practice of writing a cover letter helped me know how to talk about my capabilities for a job without being a brat about it. I am grateful for all of the assignments we have done this semester because they all helped to become a stronger writer, not to say that I am the best writer, because we all know I have a lot of work. This class has helped my confidence in my writing as well. I didn't expect to do all well as I did on my first paper. I also didn't expect that I would have useful advice for those that have been writing longer than I have. So, thank you Ms. More and my fellow classmates for making this class useful and of course fun.

Chapter 14: When Looking for a Job

This past week we started our Job unit, kind of scary just thinking about it, our job, our career, our future. I am glad that we decided to do this unit, it has already helped me so much. Not only did I need to spruce up my resume, even though I just did it last semester, but I needed to learn how to write a good cover letter. Which I believe I have. I was nervous when I first started writing my cover letter because I didn't know what to say, and I don't like bragging about myself, I always feel like a jerk when I do. However, I know that you really have to brag about yourself, without sounding like a snob, in order to show your potential employer that you have what it takes to do the job, and to show them why they should choose you over countless other applicants. After finishing my resume and cover letter I feel that I have done a pretty good job. I'm confident that after the peer review I will have a cover letter and resume that would secure me the job, even though I am pretending to apply for. The fact that we had to apply for real jobs was interesting. At first, I thought “O great, what am I supposed to do if I want to be a writer?” After thinking about the writing world, and the jobs in it, I realized that for this assignment I could be applying for an editor job at a Christian publishing company. Although, it isn't exactly what I would choose to do, I could see myself in that position. I also liked the fact that we had to choose a real job because it gave me a feel for what I'll have to do for after graduation. Although, mine will probably, hopefully, be for sending off manuscripts for publishers to read. I think that this was a great unit to wrap up with because it's an easy workload, but is by no means unimportant. The time is also good for seniors who really should already be starting applications for jobs, and for students applying for summer jobs and internships. My plans for the summer may not include needing a resume and cover letter, but I'm happy I have one for whenever I need it, and I can easily change my resume as need be now that I know more of what I need to focus on.
